The Truth About Happiness: Why Chasing the Western Dream Isn’t Always the Answer

In today’s world, many Sri Lankans dream of migrating, believing that wealth and luxury abroad will bring them happiness. But is that really true?
Sure, salaries in the West are higher, infrastructure is more advanced, and the lifestyle seems glamorous. But beneath the surface, the reality is often different. Many who migrate find themselves struggling with loneliness, family separation, and immense stress. The dream of a better life sometimes comes at the cost of mental and physical well-being.
I've seen it firsthand over my 40 years of public exposure—families breaking apart, loved ones falling ill, and people realizing too late that money alone doesn't bring happiness. They may have financial stability, but their hearts remain tied to home.
The Illusion of Happiness Abroad
For young Sri Lankans, Western countries may seem like heaven—smooth public transport, high salaries, and no dust or sweat. But what many fail to realize is that the cost of this lifestyle isn’t just in dollars. It’s in missed family moments, cultural disconnect, and the pressure to fit into a system that doesn’t always feel like home.
True Wealth Is Not Just Money
Happiness isn’t about how much money you make—it’s about how you feel inside. You can be rich but still feel empty. On the other hand, you can build success at home, staying close to your roots while working hard for a fulfilling life.
Sri Lanka is a country full of resources and opportunities. If you have determination, a positive mindset, and a strong work ethic, you can achieve success right here. Leaving is not the only solution.
Appreciate What You Have
Sri Lankans have a natural way of finding joy in life. Whether in bustling cities or remote villages, you’ll see people smiling, celebrating, and embracing life. Yet, when the World Happiness Index ranks Sri Lanka among the lowest, it makes you wonder—was there a sampling error? Because the reality we see every day tells a different story.
If you truly want a better life, don’t compare yourself to filtered social media posts or assume the grass is greener elsewhere. Work hard, stay motivated, and define success on your own terms.
At the end of the day, happiness is not a location—it’s a mindset.
